Happy Fourth of July! We celebrate the independence and freedom of our great nation. Our readings this weekend tell of the importance of speaking God's word through our actions, even if it does not seem like anyone wants to hear it. America is great because of God's Word being spoken through the actions of so many, from sea to shining sea. Our charity, both to those in our own back yards, and to those on the other side of the world is well known. And through our generous actions, God's Word travels around the world.
Young girls are being sexually abused in Kenya - where can they turn? Who will provide food and education for them and for all the other orphaned children there? The answer is: to America. The answer is: to the Catholic Church, to here at St. Andrew parish. The answer is: to you and I. And each year, we come through! You and I donate dollars to foreign missions, including the St. Francis Ministry in Kenya.
This weekend, Sr. Anisia Muthoni from St. Francis Ministry is speaking to us at all Masses. She is staying with us here in the rectory and we are learning of the life saving work her ministry is accomplishing.
As we celebrate Independence Day, may we reach into our pockets and give all we can as free and independent Catholic Americans, reaching out to help the children of Kenya. I cannot think of a better way to put our freedom to use!
God's Peace,
Deacon Dave
